Evaluation of Transfer Media Containing Different Concentrations of Hyaluronan for Human in Vitro Fertilization
Introduction: Advances in the in vitro mammalian embryo culture systems have led to an increase in the blastocyst formation and pregnancy rates, but several as yet undetermined factors appear to contribute to embryo development and implantation. In an attempt to optimize the in vitro culture conditions of embryos, the role of different macromolecules present in the culture systems has been investigated. Objective: To investigate the efficacy of hyaluronan (HA) using two different concentrations as embryo transfer media for in vitro fertilization embryo transfer cycles. Methods: The present study was carried out at embryology department, Labaid Specialized Hospital and Enam Medical College & Hospital, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2021 to December 2022. Total of 56 cycles undergoing fresh embryo transfer on day 2 or 3, 120 cycles undergoing frozen-thawed embryo transfer on day 2 or 3, and 112 cycles of frozen-thawed blastocyst transfer were included in this study. Results: There were also no significant differences in the rates of pregnancy (low-HA 29.41 (10/34), high-HA 31.82 (7/22); p= 0.69, implantation (low-HA 23.5 (8/34), high-HA 36.3 (8/22); p = .84, or abortion (low-HA 25.00 (2/8), high-HA 20.00 (2/10); p= 0.94) between the two groups. The characteristics of patients undergoing fresh embryo transfer on day 2 or 3. No significant differences were observed in the rates of pregnancy (low-HA 20.6 (12/58), high-HA 22.5% [14/62]; p=.65), implantation (low-HA 20.6% [12/58], high-HA 22.5% [14/62]; p= .42), or abortion (low-HA 15.00% [3/20], high-HA 19.3% [12/62]; p= .88) between the two groups. There were no significant differences in mean age, the number of IVF trials, number of transferred embryos, or endometrial thickness between the two groups. No significant differences were noted in the rates of pregnancy low-HA 46.0 (24/53), high-HA 41.8 (26/62); p=.40), implantation (low-HA 45.8% (48/105), high-HA 41.3 (46/111); p= .41), or abortion (low-HA 17.6 (5/27), high-HA 26.9% (7/26); p= .14) between the two groups. Conclusion: The present results showed that pregnancy, implantation, and abortion rates with transfer media containing different HA concentrations were similar.
